Thep Thavonsouk

What is your artwork about (underlying concept, focus, themes, intent, etc)?

My artwork is about spirituality, silence, beauty and a sense of humility. My paintings are inspired by the radiance of light, by drama and beauty from the rain and clouds, from fog and mist. My paintings celebrate the grandeur of Nature and the insignificance of man with their moods evoking poetic, meditative, etherial and spiritual enlightenment.

What informs your artwork or what are your influences?

I was influenced by the Impressionists as well as Picasso and Mark Rothko.

What matters to you most about the work that you do?

That it will not be ephemeral. Painting is my lifelong passion and it is the only thing that I will do until my last day.

Do you feel you need to position your work within the context of art history and if so what's your take on that?

History will be kind to authentic and honest artists...

Is there a trigger or a starting point for each piece?

Saffron Robes have an impact on me and my work. From the fabric to the dyes and the folds and Buddhist monks weariing them out to pray, to make merit, it is a sight that can not be easily forgotten.

How has your work evolved over the last five years?

They have found the elegance of Simplicity. Like an Ikebana; less is more.

What is currently the central motivation for or conceptual concern in your work?

That the painting speaks of tranquility and joy.

How does your physical/geographical environment inform the work you do?

As in #1.

What mediums, techniques, or processes are involved in your art making (and why these)?

A: Ink, watercolour and pastel on handmade rice paper.
B: Oil on canvas/ oil on linen.

Grinding ink in a soapstone inkwell with water is meditative. Rice paper is a very absorbant medium. One has to know and master his brushes and paper. It takes about 20 years to have a good notion of how delicate these mediums are and how to work with them.

Oil on canvas/linen is a joy and challenge. It is the opposite of ink and rice paper. With oil there is a second chance, unlike ink/watercolour on rice paper.

What are your other passions in life and how have these influenced your work?

Drawing, photography, tennis and travel. All 4 have contributed to the BALANCE that I need for my personal as well as my artistic life.

Why are you an artist?

I remember always drawing and painting ever since I was a young child. Perhaps I was born to be one?
