Artist Statement

I graduated from the University of Calgary BFA, majoring in painting in 1983. Over the years, I have attended Emma Lake Workshops, a Red Deer College summer session and the Metchosin International Summer School of the Arts (MISSA). I have donated my paintings to several prominent fund raising events, and many are part of private and corporate collections.

The Abstract Expressionists of the 1950’s and 60’s were of particular interest to me. For example, when Morris Louis poured acrylic paint in order to stain raw canvas, he produced “lovely transparent veils of hue.” The colour relationship of two triangles by Mark Rothko “set up a gentle position of tranquil abstracts”. Takao Tanabe’s land and seascapes were painted with muted tones. And finally, I admired Lauren Harris’ strength of composition and Helen Frankenthaler’s use of colour.

Prairie landscapes are never comprehended all at once. It’s the absorption of multiple moments and details that draw me to paint. The sense of awe that energizes the moment, the powerful vastness, subtleties of softness, the hidden life force, are qualities that keep me attuned to the prairie.
